If you were Tally, would you ask the Warden to make you pretty?
Absolutely! I would do it knowing that if I try the medicine to see if it works, I can help the pretties have their own minds and think freely.

Confessions #51
Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?
You should never regret doing something that is the right thing to do. David will learn to forgive her and forget about it.

Hipocratic Oath #50
Should Maddy have forced Shay the take the "cure?" Why or why not?
You can never force anyone to do something they don't want to do. Maddy was right for letting Shay decide.

Night Alone # 49
If you were Shay, would you get the cure? Why or why not?
Of course I would! If Maddy says she is 99% sure it works and will save me from something that could be fatal, I would do it! Shay should look in to her and remember who she was, and realize she could die without this cure.

Get Away #48
Respond to the following quote from the chapter...what does it mean to you?
"Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere, changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."
This quote is what the whole operation is about. I don't understand why Dr. Cable can't just remove lesions and let them be who they are and look good at the same time.

Rescue #47
Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of this chapter?
Tally and David go to Special Circumstances and knock out Dr. Cable in order to save the captured Smokies. Shay goes with them, but all of a sudden thinks that she was so immature when she was ugly and is completely brain-washed, just like all other Pretties are. And the kicker? Maddy announces Az was killed by Dr. Cable.

Inside #46
Is this quote a play on words, or does it have a deeper meaning to the story? "Radiology. Neurology. Magnetic Imaging," she read sofly. "Operation Theatre Two."
I think it's a deeper meaning. It's all the rooms used in the process of becoming pretty. The rooms it took years for David's parents to learn about.
What "labels do Tally and David find in the Special Circumstances building? Give a BRIEF description of what you think each means.
Radiology: X-rays of the body or other radiation.
Neurology: Medical science dealing with the nervous system.
Magnetic Imaging: A painless procedure using a magnet and radio waves to make images of the body.
Operation Theatre Two: One of the operation rooms.
Long- Term Detention: A long, long detention, better described as jail.
Describe Shay's appearance at the end of the chapter using textual evidence.
"It was Shay. She was Pretty."
"She was tall and elegant, every feature. Her eyes, deep and soulful, flecked with copper and gold..."

Over The Edge #45
In this chapter a few Uglies go to New Pretty Town to do a "trick." They make the words "THE SMOKE LIVES" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you, what would it be and why?
I would write a message to my family, to show them how much I really love them.
I would write a message to my family, to show them how much I really love them.
Accomplices #44
The Uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally at the beginning of the book. When you compare her to these Uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?
Tally becomes more mature and finally realizes what goes on in her world. I believe the adventure of going to the Smoke and meeting the people who made the decision to run away and leave everything behind has changed her.

Familiar Sights #43
Do you think Tally's plan will work? David wants to save his parents, but what's driving Tally? Do you think she is crazy, or are her feelings valid?
I think Tally's plan is going to work. She wants to do something to make sure her friends know she's on their side and she didn't want to hurt them. And, yes, she is crazy. :)

Oil Plague #42
How do David and Tally describe the Rusties? Is it accurate?
They describe us as stupid, selfish people that are, apparently, hideous. I don't find this totally true at all.
What are weaknesses of OUR society?
The way people in our time treat the environment.
What are weaknesses of THEIR society?
The only thing on their minds is the way they look, and nothing else.

Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared. (i.e. a natural disaster or attack). Post the information and cite it.
9-11 Research: An Independent Investigation of the 9-11-2001 Attack: "We all know the official story of September 11th: four jetliners were hijacked by groups of four and five Arabic men armed with box cutters, who proceeded to fly three of the four jets into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Subsequently the World Trade Center Towers, weakened by the impacts and fires, collapsed into piles of rubble. The FBI had compiled a list of hijackers within three days, and it was so obvious that Osama bin Laden had masterminded the operation from caves in Afghanistan, that there was no need to seriously investigate the crime or produce evidence. The 'retaliatory' attack on the Taliban would soon commence."

Ruin #40
Describe the irony in Tally's "victory" over Dr. Cable.
Tally believes that finding the Boss's magazines is a victory because it's one thing from the smoke that Dr. Cable and Special Circumstances couldn't destroy.
What was lost in the process?
The Boss's life.

Amazing #39
Is David right? Is Tally amazing? Do you think she should be feeling guilty? Why or why not?
No, I don't think he's right, and I don't think Tally is amazing. She lied to every one else for her own good, and she is hurting them. She should feel guilty for lying to David, and for stealing him from Shay.

Run #38
Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or an enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do now?
I bet the voice in the dark could be a friend, maybe Croy or the Boss. I think she will try to find out who it was.

In Case of Damage #37
Explain what self preservation means to you. Is it the most important thing? Would you lie because of it?
Self preservation is to protect yourself, no matter what. Sometimes it is the most important thing, but sometimes someone else's matters more. No, I don't think I would lie for my own self preservation, if someone could get hurt in the process. I'd rather risk my own self preservation than someone else's.

The Rabbit Pen #36
Tally had changed her mind about the Smoke and the operation, but what will she do about all that now? Whose side is she on?
She decided to be on David and Shay's side. I guess since she wanted to stay in the Smoke, she won't do anything about the operation. She has learned what really goes on during the operation, and she doesn't want to risk hurting herself.

Invasion #35
Is this the climax of the book? Explain why or why you don't think so in a few sentences.
Yes, it is the climax because Special Circumstances is finally coming and will probably destroy the Smoke and take everyone away, including Tally. It's where Tally realizes what she's done and when she tries to escape.

Burning Bridges #34
Read the following quote David says to Tally. "What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful." Name one person in your personal (home) life and one in your academic life ( you may leave them nameless if you wish)...what makes this person beautiful?
Home life: My sister, Mckenna. Not only is she physically beautiful, but she is beautiful because she is always smiling, always giggling. Three years ago, she dislocated her knee, and she can still love her life and not think anything about it. She is really beautiful for putting the bad things off to the side and celebrate the good things.
Acedemic life: Kirstin Robertson. She is so beautiful, and intelligent, and pure. Without her, I would probably be a bully. She keeps me quiet in class and helps me make good choices. And, she is like my twin! Everybody thinks we look alike, and we have been getting that since the first grade!

Pretty Minds #33
Respond to the following quote. What does it mean to you/the story? "Becoming pretty doesn't just change the way you look...it changes the way you think." How would you want to change mentally and physically if you were pretty? (think...habits, intelligence, and physical attributes)
This quote is probably going to make Tally want to leave the Smoke. Tally wants to be pretty, which will change the way she thinks. So, instead of staying with her friends, she'll leave it all because the thought of being perfect changes her.
I would want: Better eye vision, perfectly straight teeth, A GOOD BACK, perfectly-shaped eyebrows, big blue eyes, a better- controlled temper, lots of patience, beautiful skin, NO FRECKLES, have the ability to get above a 95 in all my classes. I want to keep my hair the same.

The Secret #32
What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general?
"But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure I know about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who look almost the same. But parents and children? That's just weird."
This quote tells me that maybe the operations the parents and children have could make them look different, but since David and his dad are both ugly, they look the same.
Predict what you think being "pretty" is.
Being pretty makes you think and feel different. It makes all pretties feel higher, better than uglies, but nobody cares about how much you change because all they want is to be "beautiful".

Find an example of imagery, personification, and simile. Quote directly and give page numbers.
Imagery: "...the orchids with pale malevolence in the moonlight, a frozen sea against the dark shore of the forest." page 245
Personification: "...choking the life out of other plants, out of the soil itself..."
Simile: "Like walking poison, she killed everything."
Does it require bravery to meet David's parents? Why or why not?
Yes, because she is still debating whether or not to activate her heart pendant.

Suspicion #30
Do you think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?
YES! He's Shay's man! Tally knows it, too!
Tally recieved a gift from David in the chapter that is special. Have you ever recieved something that made others jealous as this gift did? Did your gift have a meaning behind it as Tally's had?
I do get special gifts sometimes, but other people don't get jealous of them.

Hearththrob #29
Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the Smoke? Explain.
She waited too long. She became friends with all the people who lived at the Smoke, and now she feels guilty. She realizes that she would be a traitor to them. She is saying it's easier to hurt someone when your not fond of them.

David #28
If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away? Support your answer with textual evidence.
"They are doctors."
"Huh. But...hang on. Doctors? How old were they when they ran away?"
"Old enough. They weren't uglies anymore."
I think they left because they thought being pretty was boring and they didn't want their child to have their mind set on only being pretty, like Tally ended up being.

Work #27
Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. Post it. What is beautiful about it? Is there anything ugly about it?
This picture is beautiful because of the way the sky looks. The sun is peeking out of the clouds and turning the sky orange. But it's ugly because when I look at it, I think there used to be hundreds of trees here. That's what I notice about a lot of buildings. That they didn't grow there. Trees were cut down so they could be built.

The Model #26
What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right?
Yes, some girls starved themselves because they felt ugly, and that starving yourself is "beautiful". It really isn't though. Not even close. In Tally and Shay's time, the most beautiful girls from the Rusties are considered Ugly. I think that's kind of funny, the way they think of us. They don't understand that not everybody in our world could be pretty, because in their time, everybody can.

Bug Eyes #24
List the important events of the chapter in chronological order.
-Pretties save Tally from the fire.
- They put her in the machine.
-The Pretties (rangers) explain why they spread the fire.
- They let her go and she continues her journey.
Respond to the following quote: "...Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."
When she first began her journey, she had her mind set on becoming pretty. The closer she gets to the Smoke, the more she realizes what she is doing to her friend.

Give one example of each of these from the chapter: imagery, personification and a simile.
Simile: "...a sound like a roaring wind in her dreams."
Personification: "The fire was growing stronger. Fingers of it shot up the hill..."

The Side You Despise #22
What do you think the flying machine was? Who was in it? Make a prediction.
I think the flying machine was an old car from the Rusties that some Uglies found lying around.

The Worst Mistake #21
Have you ever made yourself do something you didn't want to do because you knew you had to?
I used to cheer at Legacy Allstars. Well, at one competition, we had a major problem with the coaches going on. My mom and my sister said that we had to quit. I didn't want to quit, but I saw how serious my sister was about moving to Woodlands Elite. I decided to at least see what it was like just for my sister. I'm so glad I decided to switch gyms, because now i've been at Woodlands Elite for 3 years on one of the highest teams in the gym!
Predict what you think will happen next.
I think some Uglies will come and kidnap her.
